EXTRA: TikTok restricts Nigerian users from going live at night

TikTok has temporarily restricted access to the ‘Live’ feature for Nigerian users during late-night hours.

At midnight on Sunday, the social media platform revealed that the restriction is to enhance an ongoing investigation and also keep the app “safe and protected”.

“TikTok LIVE Update in Nigeria. We’re temporarily limiting LIVE late at night in Nigeria as part of our investigation to ensure our platform remains safe and our community stays protected,” the notification reads.

The live sessions, which had been active earlier in the night, became unavailable between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., with affected accounts showing a “No Access” label.

The restriction also blocked creators from viewing live broadcasts from other countries.

However, creators who earn through ‘Live’ gifting retained their balances and previous earnings, alleviating concerns over financial loss.

To access TikTok’s live feature, users typically need at least 1,000 followers, be 16 years or older (18+ to earn from gifts), and maintain a clean account with no guideline violations.

The restriction comes a few months after the app removed over 3.6 million videos in Nigeria between January and March 2025 for violating its community guidelines, with 98.7% taken down before being viewed and 91.9% removed within 24 hours.

In March 2025, TikTok reported removing 129 accounts in West Africa linked to covert operations.

During the first quarter of 2025, the company also banned 42,196 live rooms and interrupted 48,156 streams in Nigeria for guideline violations.
