Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano, has formally resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
In a letter addressed to the chairman of Diso-Chiranchi ward in Gwale LGA of Kano, the governor cited “deepening internal crises” and “prolonged leadership disputes” as key reasons for his exit.
According to Sunusi Tofa, the governor’s spokesperson and director general of media and publicity, the resignation takes effect from Friday, 23 January 2026.
Yusuf expressed gratitude to the NNPP for the platform and support since 2022, while noting that persistent internal challenges, leadership disagreements, and ongoing legal processes before the courts have created irreconcilable divisions and uncertainty at state and national levels.
“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) of my decision to resign my membership of the party, with effect from Friday, 23rd, January 2026,” the letter reads.
“In recent times, the party has been confronted with persistent internal challenges arising from leadership disagreements and ongoing legal processes, many of which are presently before the courts for judicial determination.
“The growing disenfranchisement among party members has created deep divisions within the party structure, resulting in cracks that appear increasingly irreconcilable and have generated uncertainty at both state and national levels.”
Yusuf described his decision as one made after careful reflection, in good faith, and driven solely by the best interests of Kano state’s people, without bitterness or ill will.
“After careful reflection, and without prejudice to the party’s capacity to resolve its internal challenges, I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” Yusuf added.
“This decision is taken in good faith, without any ill will, and with a continued commitment to peace, unity, and the progress of Kano State.”
The statement added that Yusuf resigned alongside 21 members of the Kano state house of assembly, 8 members of the house of representatives, and all 44 LGA chairmen in the state.
The resignation comes after the governor’s meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House on January 19.
