Tinubu swears in Tunji Disu as IGP

President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Tunji Disu as the 23rd inspector-general of police (IGP).

The ceremony took place at the Council Chambers of the State House in Abuja on Wednesday, just ahead of the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

Tinubu also administered oaths of office to six commissioners of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) and two from the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC).

The event drew a gathering of ministers, senior government officials, and family members of the appointees. Kashim Shettima, the vice-president; George Akume, secretary to the government of the federation; Femi Gbajabiamila, chief of staff; Nuhu Ribadu, national security adviser (NSA); and Esther Walson-Jack, head of the civil service.

Speaking to state house correspondents after the swearing-in, Disu addressed pressing national security concerns, including potential protests linked to global tensions.

He said the police is aware of the various groups and sects in Nigeria and their potential external influences.

Disu said the force is on high alert, with increased patrols and efforts to ensure officers act professionally without taking laws into their own hands.

On the push for state police, Disu declared that it “has come to stay” and that the police is not opposed but views it as a partnership opportunity.

He dismissed fears that state police would undermine the federal force.

Tinubu appointed Disu as acting IGP on February 24, after the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.

On March 2, the Nigeria Police Council confirmed Disu’s appointment as IGP.
