Gunmen attack students’ hostels at Ekiti University

Panic and chaos erupted late Monday night as gunmen attacked students’ hostels at Ekiti State University (EKSU) in Ado-Ekiti, prompting students to scamper for safety, Vanguard reports.

According to eyewitnesses, the attackers stormed the hostels located off-campus, armed, and moved from hostel to hostel robbing students of their valuables, including mobile phones, laptops and cash.

A student of the institution with an X (formerly Twitter) account, @yapperaholicc, who also confirmed the attack in a post on X, said such an attack has become a recurring incident in the area.

In the post made at around 3:01 am of Tuesday, the student wrote, “Armed men are attacking students in their hostels in EKSU at midnight!!!!!”

The user, who said the attack occurred at the Phase 2 area of the university community, added, “We are supposed to be reading for our exams! It has been going on for three days now!!! They are also robbing us. Please help us repost.”

When contacted, the public relations officer of the Ekiti State Police Command, Abutu Sunday, confirmed the attack, saying a suspect has been arrested and further investigation is going on.

“A suspect has been arrested in connection to the incident, and he is currently undergoing investigation, while necessary measures have been put in place to forestall reoccurrence,” he said.

Meanwhile, the students of the university have called on the state government and security agencies to intensify patrols and provide adequate protection in areas surrounding the institution
