Gunmen kill three security operatives in NIPSS attack

Gunmen, on Monday, attacked the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, near Jos in Plateau State, killing three security operatives in a late-night assault that triggered panic within and around the facility.

The attackers were said to have stormed the institute at about 11:40 p.m. on Monday, opening fire on security personnel stationed at the main gate.

The exchange of gunfire that followed prevented the assailants from gaining access to the premises.

Eyewitness accounts and staff sources confirmed that the attackers succeeded in killing three security operatives during the confrontation, including a policeman and other personnel attached to the institute’s security detail.

A staff member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attack caused confusion and fear within the facility.

“I was sleeping when I heard gunshots. At first, I didn’t know what was happening, but when I came out, I realised the institute was under attack. It caused panic everywhere,” the source said.

Residents of nearby communities also reported sustained gunfire that lasted several minutes, raising tension in the area.

Security operatives were eventually reinforced, forcing the attackers to flee.

Officials said the swift response prevented the gunmen from penetrating deeper into the institute.

The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that three security personnel lost their lives during the attack.

“The Plateau State Police Command wishes to confirm the incident involving security personnel on duty at NIPSS, Kuru. Regrettably, three security personnel lost their lives during the incident,” the statement said.

It added that security had been reinforced around the area and that normal activities had resumed.

“The situation is under control, and normal activities have resumed. Investigation is ongoing,” the command said.

Similarly, the management of NIPSS confirmed the incident, noting that security agencies had commenced investigations and urged the public to rely only on official information.

“The situation was promptly brought under control through the swift response of security personnel. There is currently no threat to the safety of staff, participants, or facilities,” it stated.

NIPSS, Nigeria’s premier policy think tank and training institute for senior public officials, is regarded as a sensitive national institution, making the attack a major security concern.

Security agencies are continuing investigations to determine those behind the assault and the motive for the attack
