Gunmen suspected to be on a reprisal mission invaded Rumuodogo 2 Community in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State in the early hours of Monday, killing two residents.
Community sources told Daily Trust that the attackers accused residents of Rumuodogo 2 of being responsible for the killing of people whose bodies were found floating in a nearby river last week.
A resident, Monica Stephen, whose husband was among those attacked, said the assailants came from a neighbouring community in another local government area bordering Emohua.
She said the gunmen stormed their home at about 1 a.m., broke down the door and dragged her and her husband outside.
“They started beating my husband before shooting him. They wanted to kill me, too, but one of them asked the others to spare me because I am a woman.
“They claimed our community was responsible for the killing of the people whose bodies were discovered in the river last Monday,” she said.
The spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, ASP Blessing Kaborlo Agabe, confirmed the attack.
“Two people were killed in the attack. Investigation is ongoing to ascertain the motive behind the attack and arrest the perpetrators,” she said.
