Sani Yellow, a notorious bandit commander operating in Zamfara, has reportedly been killed in Anka LGA of the state.
A video seen by TheCable shows what appears to be Yellow’s lifeless body being dragged through a street after his death.
However, conflicting accounts have emerged over the circumstances surrounding how the notorious bandit leader was killed.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, multiple local sources said Yellow was shot dead on Friday at Dan Jibga market in Anka LGA by armed men believed to be loyal to rival bandit kingpin Dogo Gide.
The sources said the attackers ambushed him in broad daylight while he was reportedly carrying out activities at the market, describing the killing as another sign of the rivalry among bandit factions competing for territory and influence in Zamfara.
Another account, however, attributed Yellow’s death to a recent security operation in Anka LGA.
Security sources quoted by the publication claimed the bandit commander was killed during a coordinated operation involving security personnel and members of the Maiduguri Special Vigilantes deployed to support ongoing counter-banditry operations in the state.
TheCable could not immediately verify which of the two accounts accurately reflects the circumstances surrounding Yellow’s death.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation were unsuccessful as calls, a WhatsApp message and a text message sent to Onyinyechi Anele, the Nigerian Army’s spokesperson, were not immediately returned.
Yellow was widely regarded as one of the most influential bandit commanders operating across the forests of Anka, Bukkuyum, Maru and neighbouring LGAs.
He was accused of orchestrating attacks on rural communities, mass abductions for ransom, cattle rustling and other violent raids across Zamfara and neighbouring states.
