The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has won all 21 chairmanship seats in the Anambra state LGA elections held on Saturday.
The party also secured all the councillorship positions across the state, according to results announced by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) on Sunday.
Genevieve Osakwe, chair of ANSIEC, announced the results at the commission’s office in Awka, the state capital.
Osakwe said APGA won all 21 chairmanship positions, while its candidates also emerged winners in the councillorship elections across the 21 local government areas.
She said the commission carefully collated and analysed the results to ensure there were no errors.
“All the candidates of APGA have been officially declared winners as councilors and executive council chairmen-elects,” Osakwe said.
“The elections took place across 362 electoral wards and 21 local government areas (LGAs) in Anambra state, and it was conducted in a peaceful, free, fair, transparent and credible manner in line with the state electoral laws and guidelines.”
The ANSIEC chair said the election was conducted at all polling units across the state and described the exercise as peaceful, free and fair.
She commended residents for turning out to exercise their civic rights and security agencies for maintaining peace during the election. APGA was the only party that fielded candidates in 20 of the 21 LGAs.
The Young Progressives Party (YPP) fielded candidates only in Anambra east LGA, while no other opposition party participated in the election.
None of the opposition candidates, parties, or their agents was present at the ANSIEC office when the results were declared.
Osakwe announced the scores and names of the APGA candidates one after another before declaring them winners after they secured the highest number of votes.
She said the results had already been announced at the polling units on Saturday and that Sunday’s exercise was to formally affirm the outcome.
“We carefully collated and analysed the results to ensure that there were no mistakes. All the scores and the winners were announced at the polling units yesterday. We are here today to affirm the results as recorded,” she said.
