US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said leaders of Congress will proceed with the certification of President – elect Joe Biden ’ s win despite Capitol invasion by supporters of incumbent President Donald Trump.
In a letter to colleagues , Pelosi announced that the leaders will resume the joint session on Wednesday night to certify Biden ’ s win once the Capitol is “ cleared for use . ”
“ In consultation with Leader Hoyer and Whip Clyburn and after calls to the Pentagon , the Justice Department and the Vice President , we have decided we should proceed tonight at the Capitol once it is cleared for use . Leader Hoyer will be sending out more guidance later today, ” Pelosi said , according to CNN.
Trump’ s supporters had stormed the Capitol in Washington during a joint session of Congress held to certify Biden ’ s win, a desperate last-minute bid to overturn the November election that sparked chaos and accusations of a “ coup ” attempt.
The violence, hours after an extraordinary rally by Trump challenging his defeat, saw flag -waving backers break down barricades outside the Capitol and swarm inside , sending the legislative sessions into an emergency recess .
Extraordinary images showed security personnel barricading the chamber while lawmakers huddled inside wearing gas masks.
A woman shot in the ensuing melee was pronounced dead .
US Senate reconvenes to certify Biden win
The US Senate reconvened late Wednesday and resumed the process of certifying Joe Biden ’ s presidential election victory, after a mob protesting Donald Trump’ s defeat violently invaded the Capitol building.
“ As we reconvene in this chamber , the world will again witness the resilience and strength of our democracy, ” Vice President Mike Pence said as he brought the Senate into session.
“ To those who wreaked havoc in our Capitol today, you did not win. Violence never wins, freedom wins, ” Pence added . “ And this is still the people’ s house. ”
It should have been one of the most straightforward days of the US presidential transition , with Congress certifying Democrat Joe Biden ’ s victory — a procedure so routine it usually merits little if any news coverage.
Instead the world watched in shock and horror on Wednesday as a mob of Donald Trump supporters , encouraged by the president , stormed the US Capitol in a bid to thwart lawmakers from their constitutional duty .
Attack on US Capitol incited by Trump, shameful – Obama
Former President Barack Obama has lamented the attack on the United States Capitol Hill on Wednesday .
He said this in a statement following violence by supporters of Donald Trump where one person was killed and many injured .
Obama implored Republicans to “ choose reality and take the first steps toward extinguishing the flames. ”
He said , “ History will rightly remember today’ s violence at the Capitol, incited by a sitting president who has continued to baselessly lie about the outcome of a lawful election , as a moment of great dishonor and shame for our nation . But we ’ d be kidding ourselves if we treated it as a total surprise .
“ I ’ ve been heartened to see many members of the President ’ s party speak up forcefully today. Their voices add to the examples of Republican state and local election officials in states like Georgia who ’ ve refused to be intimidated and have discharged their duties honorably.
“ We need more leaders like these — right now and in the days, weeks, and months ahead as President – Elect Biden works to restore a common purpose to our politics . It’ s up to all of us as Americans, regardless of party, to support him in that goal. ”
Twitter suspends Donald Trump’s account for 12hrs, threatens ban
Twitter locked Donald Trump’s account for 12 hours “for repeated and severe violations” and has threatened to permanently suspend his account if he violates more policies in the future.
“As a result of the unprecedented and ongoing violent situation in Washington, D.C., we have required the removal of three @realDonaldTrump . Tweets that were posted earlier today for repeated and severe violations of our Civic Integrity policy,” the Twitter Safety account tweeted on Wednesday. “This means that the account of @realDonaldTrump will be locked for 12 hours following the removal of these Tweets. If the Tweets are not removed, the account will remain locked.”
“Future violations of the Twitter Rules, including our Civic Integrity or Violent Threats policies, will result in permanent suspension of the @realDonaldTrump account,” the company continued. “Our public interest policy — which has guided our enforcement action in this area for years — ends where we believe the risk of harm is higher and/or more severe.”
Earlier on Wednesday, Twitter and Facebook faced increasing calls from users on social media to delete or suspend the president’s accounts, The Warp reported.
“Let me say in no uncertain terms @jack @vijaya @kayvz: If you do not suspend Donald Trump’s Twitter account for the next day at least, this mob attack on Congress is also on you. Sorry, but he has incited violence for days, using your tools in large part and you need to act now,” tech journalist and New York Times contributor Kara Swisher tweeted.
“You’ve got blood on your hands, @jack and Zuck. For four years you’ve rationalized this terror. Inciting violent treason is not a free speech exercise. If you work at those companies, it’s on you too. Shut it down,” Chris Sacca, an early Twitter investor tweeted.

Bill Clinton blames Trump, lawmakers for capitol riot
Former United States President Bill Clinton has denounced the violence at the US Capitol , blaming Donald Trump and his supporters in the US Congress.
He made this known in a series of tweets on Thursday.
The statement came on a shocking day for the United States , which saw mobs overrun Congress after a rally by Trump, who had sought to thwart the process of lawmakers certifying election results.
That was the final administrative step before Democratic President -elect Joe Biden enters the White House later this month, but the normally ceremonial affair spiraled into mayhem .
According to him , the riot was fueled by more than four years of poison politics and spreading misinformation.
He said , “ Today we faced an unprecedented assault on our Capitol, our Constitution , and our country.
“ The assault was fueled by more than four years of poison politics spreading deliberate misinformation, sowing distrust in our system , and pitting Americans against one another .
“ The match was lit by Donald Trump and his most ardent enablers, including many in Congress, to overturn the results of an election he lost.
“ The election was free , the count was fair, the result is final. We must complete the peaceful transfer of power our Constitution mandates .
“ I have always believed that America is made up of good, decent people . I still do .
“ If that’ s who we really are , we must reject today’ s violence, turn the page , and move forward together—honoring our Constitution , remaining committed to a government of the people, by the people , and for the people. ”
Trump Tells Supporters To ‘Go Home’ After Storming Of US Capitol
President Donald Trump told his supporters on Wednesday to “go home” after they stormed the US Capitol following a rally during which he repeated his spurious claims of election fraud.
At the same time as he told his supporters to go home, Trump repeated his incendiary allegations that the November 3 election won by Democrat Joe Biden was “stolen.”
“I know your pain,” Trump said in a one-minute video on Twitter. “”We had an election that was stolen from us.
“But you have to go home now,” he said. “We have to have peace. We have to have law and order.”
Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol after his nearby rally, disrupting a joint session of Congress being held to confirm Biden’s victory.
Biden Brands Capitol Violence ‘Insurrection,’ Demands Trump Call Off Siege
President-elect Joe Biden on Wednesday denounced the storming of the US Capitol as an “insurrection” and demanded President Donald Trump go on television to call an end to the violent “siege.”
“At this hour, our democracy is under unprecedented assault,” the veteran Democrat said in Wilmington, after hundreds of Trump supporters protesting his election defeat swarmed the Capitol building and put the nation’s lawmakers at risk.
“I call on President Trump to go on national television now to… demand an end to this siege,” Biden said. “To storm the Capitol, to smash windows, to occupy offices, the floor of the United States Senate… threatening the safety of duly elected officials? It’s not a protest, it’s insurrection.”
