EXTRA: Borno College Suspends Students for Declining to Welcome Buhari

Following the visit of President Muhammadu Buhari to the College of Nursing and Midwifery in Borno, the school has suspended students for one week for not welcoming the President while he was at the school, FIJ has confirmed.

Buhari had visited Borno, an insurgency-ripped state where many have abandoned their homes in some local governments to take shelter at Internally Displaced Persons Camps, to commission some projects. Borno State is the ground zero of over a decade-long insurgency in the country, a problem Buhari failed to end despite his pre-election promise in 2015.

“Yes, he visited our school but some students refused to come out to welcome him and as a result of that, the students were suspended,” a student who asked to be anonymous told FIJ.

“I can’t say how many people were suspended, because the students suspended are not from the same class; some are juniors and seniors.”

A letter in circulation read that an unknown student had been suspended for a week “for disobedience of executive order to welcome to the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, GCON (on the 17th of June 2021)’.

In an address on June 16, Governor Babagana Zulum had urged Borno residents to “come out and honour a President, whose love for Borno has been so obvious”.

FIJ could not immediately reach the college for comments. A number on a Facebook page in the name of the college was unreachable when it was dialed.
