The Nigerian Army has been accused of murdering one Harold Akunne, a pastor, in Awka-Etiti, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
According to a tweet seen by FIJ, the pastor ran into soldiers while returning from a mortuary where he had gone to deposit “the remains of a dead neighbour.”
“The soldiers of the Nigerian Army murdered Pastor Harold Akunne yesterday, 7th October, 2021, in Awka-Etiti, Idemili South LGA of Anambra State,” the tweet reads.
“The pastor, who helped to deposit the remains of a dead neighbour in a mortuary, ran into the soldiers on his way back.
“The soldiers allegedly searching for Unknown Gunmen that passed through the town opened fire on the pastor unprovoked, killing him and a female passenger on the spot.
“Many other people, especially those passing by vehicles that resemble Toyota Sienna, were shot at. Undisclosed number were killed and many more were victims of bullet wound.”
Akunne died in his vehicle as observed in a video obtained by FIJ, while a female passenger’s body was some distance away from the vehicle.
FIJ attempted to reach Onyeama Nwachukwu, the army spokesman, but he neither answered the calls made to him nor replied to messages sent to his phone.
FIJ earlier reported incidents of gunmen attacks and arson in Anambra State. On Thursday, Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, said the presidency might order a state of emergency in the state as it geared up for its gubernatorial election.
