Seven girls die as boat capsizes in Jigawa

Seven children, all girls, died when a boat capsized in Gamafoi village of Kafin Hausa local government area in Jigawa state.

The Nation gathered ten children were travelling from Gafasa to Gasanya village in Auyo local government area for Maulud, a religious gathering, when the incident happened.

Gamafoi village head, Malam Haruna Gamafoi, who reported the incident to the police, said: “The incident happened at around 3:30 pm when a boat capsized with girls numbering about 10 as passengers. Three were rescued while seven others died”.

The Nation learnt all occupants were between 10 to 12 years old.

It was further gathered they were in a haste to reach their destination and decided to drive a boat parked at River Gasanya themselves in the absence of a rider.

They were taken to Kafin Hausa General Hospital where seven were confirmed died by a Medical Doctor.

Jigawa Police spokesman ASP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed the tragedy to The Nation.
