Two Dead, Five Injured In Anambra Road Accident

Two persons have died with five others injured in a road accident along Onitsha-Awka Expressway in Anambra State.

The accident occurred on Sunday night, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said.

In a telephone conversation, FRSC Route Commander for Awka, Margareth Onabe, told Channels Television that the accident involved an articulated truck and commercial bus. She blamed the accident on road obstruction and excessive speed on the part of both drivers of the vehicles.

“Unidentified driver of a MAN truck with registration: FKJ22XJ number and a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number: GDD68ZP was involved in a fatal road traffic crash 14th August 2022 at about 20:45hrs,” Onabe explained on Monday.

“According to an eyewitness report, the truck developed a fault and was abandoned by the truck driver after placing caution signs at the front and rear. The bus driver was at speed and rammed into the truck from the rear and crashed.

“Twelve people compromising eight male adults and four female adults were involved in the crash. Five people, compromising three male adults and two female adults, sustained various degrees of injuries. Two male adults were killed.”

The route commander stated that FRSC first responders from RS5.33 Nteje Unit Command took the injured victims to a yet-to-be-confirmed hospital, while the victims were taken to New Word mortuary in the Nteje area of Anambra State.

While reacting to the incident, the Anambra Sector Commander, Adeoye Irelewuyi, commiserated with the families of the dead and wished the injured a quick recovery.

He equally warned motorists to desist from speeding and ensure they keep to recommended speed limits.
