The Spokesman for Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Council, Yunusa Tanko, has said the leadership of Labour Party is not aware about a Town Hall meeting between the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and organised labour unions.
Tinubu met with the leaders of the Nigerian Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress among others in Abuja on Monday.
At the event, the organised labour presented the APC candidate with their demands which included a total war on corruption.
Among other things, Tinubu listed unemployment, lack of credit system to allow workers to own houses, poverty, challenges in the educational sector, and weak industrial base of the economy as some issues he hopes to tackle as president.
But Tanko stated that they were not aware of the rendezvous until they heard it just like every other Nigerian.
He, nevertheless, said there is no cause for alarm, adding the party did not entertain fear about a possible sabotage by labour leaders as being speculated.
“We were not aware of the meeting but the TUC and NLC are for everybody. You can come and discuss. But we know they are owner of the Labour party.
“But there is no cause for alarm. We don’t entertain any fear if they meet with Tinubu and members of the ruling party or not. But I wasn’t aware of the meeting anyway,” he said.
The spokesman disclosed that the party is focused on winning the 2023 elections and won’t want to be distracted by mundane issues.
On whether Monday’s meeting lent credence to the rumour that the APC is romancing the LP over a possible alliance, Tanko denied it.
“No, we have not considered anything on alliance with any camp. We are contesting this election with our full capacity,” he stated.
The development is coming on the heel of the conviction of the Director General of Obi-Datti campaign council, Doyin Okupe, for breaching the Money Laundering Act by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja
The presiding judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, however, gave an option of N500, 000 fine on each of the 26 count charges, totalling N13m for which he was found guilty.
The former Senior Special Assistant to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, opted to pay the fine of N13 million to beat the 4:30pm deadline given by the judge.
