A 63-year-old woman lost her life and two others were injured when a huge Christmas tree fell over during bad weather in the Belgian city of Oudenaarde on Thursday evening.
According to Reuters, the authorities made the announcement on Friday.
Security camera footage on Belgian news outlets showed a highly illuminated 20-metre (65.62-foot) Christmas tree slowly bending over, then crashing close to a Christmas market as a merry-go-round whirled on the mediaeval town square.
The victim was a 63-year-old woman from Oudenaarde, according to a spokesman for the Oost-Vlaanderen province prosecutor.
It was also discovered that two women from the same town were only slightly hurt in the event.
“The investigation will focus on whether the tree had been properly secured and will also look at the impact of the weather,” the official said.
Storm Pia, which caused traffic delays in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands on Thursday, made landfall in western Belgium on Thursday, prompting the weather service to issue a yellow code warning for coastal areas.
