At least nine children have been seriously injured in an explosion in Kidandan, Giwa LGA of Kaduna state.

The explosion occurred on Saturday afternoon.

Mansir Hassan, police spokesperson in Kaduna, confirmed the development to TheCable on Saturday night.

The police spokesperson said the children picked an object from a bush and took it to a school where they were playing. He said the children attempted to open the object and it exploded in the process.

“We received the information through the DPO. You know that area is the operational area where the security agencies are conducting a lot of operation in the bush,” he said.

“So, the young boys went to the bush and they saw an object and took it to the school.

“When they got to the school, since they didn’t know what the object was, they decided to open it to see. So, in the process, it exploded and left about nine of them injured.”

The police spokesperson said the children are currently receiving treatment at a medical facility.

He said the command’s EOD has visited the scene to “ascertain the situation and find out whether it was a bomb or what exploded”.

The blast comes less than four days after an explosive rocked Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, leaving five people dead with over 77 injured.

Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo, said the explosion was caused by illegal miners who stored explosive devices in an apartment in the Bodija axis of Ibadan where the incident occurred.
