Gunmen suspected to be Biafran liberation army have threatened to kill Hon. Ngọzi Ogbu, a former political office holder, if security operatives are not withdrawn from Okigwe and Onuimo Local Government Areas of Imo State
Hon Ogbu had served as Executive Chairman of Okigwe LGA from 1997-1998, State Youth Leader of PDP from 1999-2003, member of Imo State House of Assembly from 2003-2007.
Biafran Liberation Army is the armed wing of the Biafran Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), an auto pilot faction of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
BRGIE was founded by Simon Ekpa, who was recently jailed in Finland over terrorism charges.
The deadly attacks in the region have been linked to the IPOB. But the group has repeatedly denied being responsible for the killings.
Security operatives, politicians, and even students are targets of such attacks in Nigeria’s Southeast.
In the viral video, which is circulating on Facebook, the politician is seen begging the government of the state to withdraw security operatives deployed in the area or he would be killed.
Apparently speaking under duress, Ogbu said the gunmen holding him, are working to secure the southeast. He added that the terrorists should be encouraged
One of the terrorists in a mask threatened to kill the former LG chairman and another prominent person in the area if security operatives were not withdrawn.
In a statement on Sunday, the police spokesperson in the state, Henry Okoye, said that the Imo State Police Command is aware of the viral video
He said the Commissioner of Police in the state, Aboki Danjuma, has since ordered the immediate deployment of the Command’s Tactical Units, in synergy with other security agencies, and a detailed investigation has been launched to apprehend the hoodlums and ensure the safe rescue of the lawmaker who was abducted at Onuimo on 7 September.
The Command appealed to the general public to remain calm and vigilant.
