Fire razes section of Onitsha main market in Anambra

 

A fire incident has occurred in parts of Onitsha main market on Ifejika street, near Sokoto road, in Anambra state.

The inferno, which reportedly started in one building around 6:20 am, has since spread to an adjacent structure.

The cause and other details surrounding the outbreak is yet to be ascertained at the time of filing this report.

Locals, bystanders, and fire service personnel were spotted at the location attempting to rescue valuables and merchandise from the burning structure.

 

Chukwudi Chiketa, the head of the media and publicity unit of the Anambra state fire service, confirmed the incident to Punch on Friday.

“Anambra State Fire Service is currently on intervention at the scene of the fire outbreak at Ifejika Street, by Sokoto Road, Onitsha,” he said.

“The distress call came at 0620am today, and our firefighters deployed immediately.”

He also reassured the public to remain composed, affirming that the situation is under control.
