Gunmen attack Amaechi’s convoy in Rivers

The convoy of Rotimi Amaechi, former minister of transportation, came under attack on Friday along the Ubima-Omuanwa road in Ikwerre LGA, Rivers state.

The former Rivers governor was on his way to formally register as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) at his ward in Ubima when the incident occurred.

Gunmen reportedly attempted to ambush Amaechi’s convoy but were overpowered by security operatives attached to the former minister.

Earlier on Friday, some yet-to-be-identified persons set parts of the ADC office in Ubima ablaze and also attacked Amaechi’s family’s house.

Speaking after enrolling on the ADC digital register, the former minister commended security agencies for foiling the attack on his convoy.

He asked security forces to arrest the attackers and ensure they face justice.

Amaechi cautioned ADC supporters against reprisal, saying the attackers cannot stop him from engaging with party members.

“Our role is to be calm, be peaceful. We are marching to Aso Rock. What they are doing is a distraction. What they are doing will not put food on your table,” he said.

“Tell them we are hungry. People are dropping dead every day because of hunger, and a few people are stealing our money, and they say we should keep quiet. We can no longer keep quiet.”

Amaechi asked the people of Rivers to register as ADC members to be able to vote for him during the primary election.

Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson of the Rivers police command, did not respond to calls and text messages seeking comment on the attack on Amaechi’s convoy.
