IGP Disu vows to bring perpetrators of Jos North attack to book

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Thursday visited Plateau State to commiserate with the government and people over the deadly gunmen attack in Angwan Rukuba in Jos North Local Government Area.

Speaking at the Plateau State Government House after being received by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the IGP vowed to bring the perpetrators of the deadly Sunday night attack to justice.

Disu strongly condemned the attack, which claimed the lives of several innocent citizens, describing it as tragic and unacceptable.

In a decisive response, the IGP said he had earlier deployed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, DIG Umar Shehu Nadada, to Plateau to assess the situation on the ground, coordinate ongoing operations and rejig existing security measures in conjunction with other security agencies.

IGP Disu also commiserated with Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the government and people of Plateau State, particularly the affected families and residents of Angwan Rukuba community, over the unfortunate incident.

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang while speaking at the occasion expressed deep appreciation for the show of solidarity by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and security chiefs, saying the gathering gives him hope that the state can overcome its long-standing security challenges.

Mutfwang recalled that the security problem predated his administration, noting that former governors Chief Joshua Dariye, Jonah Jang and Simon Lalong all battled it.

“It is when you sit on this seat that you appreciate the magnitude of the problem,” he said.

The governor urged community leaders to educate residents on the need for extra vigilance, to end complacency and to curb the misuse of social media, which fuels tension by recycling old videos and voice notes.

He announced stricter enforcement of the ban on commercial motorcycles, long used for criminal activities, while pledging to modernise the transport system.

Mutfwang disclosed that useful leads from the Angwan Rukuba attack are being pursued and prayed that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

He appealed to all to see the fight against violence as a common duty, saying “when you see something, say something.

”Mutfwang noted that President Tinubu was deeply touched by the incident and is committed to ending the vicious cycle of violence so that better days lie ahead for Plateau people.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang also commended Disu for aligning with President Tinubu’s vision for policing.

“You are coming at a time when the police is undergoing changes. And I’m glad that you have keyed into the vision of Mr. President,” the governor said.

Mutfwang described state policing as a restructuring for greater efficiency rather than a dismantling of the force.

He expressed gladness that the IGP had embraced it.
