Obi to FG: Declare state of emergency in flood-ravaged areas

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has asked the federal government to declare a state of emergency in places affected by flooding in the country.

Obi said this on Tuesday while visiting Ibi LGA of Taraba state to condole with affected residents.

He also called on the federal government to ensure that rivers are desilted to avoid recurrence of the flooding.

“We are calling on the government to come with interventions, declare all the affected states – a disaster area,” Obi said.

“What the federal government has to do to stop this is to ensure that the waters are desilted.

“The rivers have all been silted and we need to work on them, this is easy, it is done globally, all over the world.”

Last week, Obi had asked other presidential candidates to suspend their campaigns and assist victims of flooding in the country, saying Nigeria is greater than everyone, irrespective of political differences.

He announced that he had suspended his campaign activities to visit victims across the country.

Obi is one of the leading candidates in the 2023 presidential election alongside Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former Anambra governor enjoys huge popularity on social media and boasts of a massive support base known as ‘Obidients’.
