Officer killed as gunmen attack Enugu police station

Gunmen in the early hours of Monday attacked the Awgu Divisional Police Headquarters in Enugu State and killed a police constable identified as Akpa Emmanuel.

The spokesman for the state police command, Daniel Ndukwe, said in a statement in Enugu that several other police officers were injured in the attack.

He added that the attackers carted away weapons, including one AK-47 rifle and two riot guns from the armoury.

Ndukwe said the new Commissioner of Police in the state, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has deployed the Deputy Commissioner of Operations, Special Forces, the Police Mobile Force (PMF), the Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU), and other tactical teams to strengthen security at the division.

Residents of the community told journalists that the heavily armed gunmen stormed the police division very early in the morning and began firing sporadically into the complex.

“The assailants also vandalised facilities at the station and made away with some weapons. Right now, there is tension in Awgu town with heavy security presence as spy agents and other operatives have taken over the area,” a resident said.

Suspected Biafra agitators in Nigeria’s South-East have killed dozens of police officers and destroyed facilities and equipment worth billions of naira in the region since February 2021.
