Police redeploy DPO seen slapping man in viral video

The federal capital territory (FCT) police command has redeployed the divisional police officer (DPO) of Ushafa division after a viral video showed him slapping a young man.

In the clip, which went viral on X on Tuesday, the officer was seen assaulting the unidentified victim, before forcing him into a patrol van.

The incident reportedly occurred on October 22, 2025.

A statement on Wednesday signed by Josephine Edeh, the command spokesperson, said Miller Dantawaye, the FCT commissioner of police, condemned the officer’s conduct, describing it as “unprofessional and unacceptable”.

Dantawaye said the DPO’s action fell short of the discipline, civility, and professionalism expected of officers under his command.

“The officer has been redeployed, and the matter is currently under investigation,” the statement reads.

He reminded divisional police officers and their subordinates to remain courteous and law-abiding in the discharge of their duties, warning that any misconduct or abuse of power will attract severe sanctions.

The commissioner also urged residents to remain respectful in their dealings with police officers, noting that mutual respect and cooperation are vital for effective community policing.

Residents are advised to report suspicious activities through the command’s emergency numbers: 08061581938, 08032003913, or via the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) on 08107314192.
