Police to deploy 45,000 officers ahead of Anambra gov election

The Nigeria Police Force has revealed plans to deploy 45,000 officers across Anambra State in preparation for the governorship election slated for November 8, 2025, as security agencies step up measures to ensure a peaceful poll.

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, made the announcement during a meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security held on Tuesday at the Independent National Electoral Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

The meeting, chaired by INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, and co-chaired by National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, brought together senior security, intelligence, and law enforcement officials to finalise strategies for an incident-free election.

Ribadu was represented at the meeting by the Director of Internal Security in the Office of the NSA, Hassan Abdullahi.

Egbetokun, represented by Commissioner of Police Abayomi Shogunle, who heads the Elections Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation unit, said, “The IGP will continue to ensure that the Nigeria Police Force provides adequate security for all electoral processes in all parts of Nigeria, and in particular regarding the upcoming governorship elections in Anambra State.

“The Nigerian Police Force is deploying 45,000 police officers from across the states of the federation to go to Anambra State to ensure that there is a peaceful election.”

The CP emphasised that only federal security agencies would be involved in the election.

“The Nigerian Police Force will ensure that only officers and officials from the ICCES will be permitted to play a role in the Anambra state governorship election.

“So, all the vigilante groups and all the other agencies of the states would not be allowed to have any role to play during this election,” he added.

Shogunle outlined pre-election security operations, including tactical deployments and restrictions on movement.

“From the 1st of November, when the Nigerian Police Force will start the first pre-election deployment, which will include tactical units to go on additional clearance operations, and also to ensure that all the people that some of the stakeholders are trying to use to foment trouble because of the election will be adequately disarmed, arrested, and prosecuted.

“On the day of the election, there’s going to be a restriction on movements. All exits and entry points into Anambra State will be adequately planned and policed to ensure that no ugly incident happens during this election,” he said.

In his remarks, Abdullahi stressed the government’s commitment to a safe election. “As we prepare for the Anambra state governorship election scheduled for 8 November 2025, we have put in place robust security measures.

“These include enhanced surveillance, the deployment of sufficient security personnel, and improved intelligence gathering to prevent any attempt by disruptive elements or desperate politicians from undermining the electoral process,” he said.

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, assured all of the protection of corps members supporting the election.

“I promise to be personally there with you on the ground in Anambra before, during, and after the election to ensure your safety,” he said.

Earlier, the Chairman of INEC emphasised that the commission is “fully prepared” for the election and remains dedicated to ensuring a smooth and credible process
