Some policemen in Imo State, Nigeria’s South-east, have been filmed displaying cult related activities.
In a now viral video, the clip showed some officers in Owerri, the state capital, wearing berets and caps associated with the Vikings confraternity, also known as ‘Denmark (DNKI)’.
Chanting “men mount” periodically, some of the officers were also seen shooting sporadically into the air.
Promise to discipline
Aboki Danjuma, commissioner of police in the state, ordered a thorough probe into the incident on Friday, describing the behavior of the officers as “unethical and unbecoming” of personnel of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
In a statement signed by Henry Okoye, spokesperson of the police in Imo, Danjuma said the command would ensure that the officers involved face disciplinary action after the conclusion of the investigation.
“The commissioner of police strongly condemns the conduct as unethical and unbecoming of police officers,” the statement reads.
“He assures the public that the matter is being handled with utmost seriousness and that upon conclusion of investigations, the officers involved will face serious disciplinary measures in accordance with police regulations.”
The police in Imo reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and ensuring effective policing in line with its constitutional mandate.
