Pope Leo condemns deadly attacks in Nigeria

Pope Leo XIV has expressed sorrow over recent violent attacks on communities in Nigeria, following reports that gunmen killed as many as 162 people in one of the country’s deadliest incidents in recent months.

The pontiff made the remarks in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, offering prayers for the victims and calling on authorities to strengthen security.

“It is with sorrow and concern that I learned of the recent attacks against various communities in Nigeria leading to a heavy loss of life. I express my prayerful closeness to all the victims of violence and terrorism. I likewise hope that the competent Authorities will continue to work with determination to ensure the safety and protection of the life of every citizen,” Pope Leo XIV wrote.

The deadly assault reportedly occurred in Woro village, Kwara State, shortly after the military conducted operations in the area against what it described as “terrorist elements.”

During the attack, gunmen reportedly burned shops and the home of a traditional ruler, forcing wounded residents to flee into nearby bushes.

The incident has heightened concerns over insecurity in Nigeria, with calls for intensified efforts by security agencies to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further attacks.
