Rain destroys 2,300 hectares of farmland in Kaduna

Torrential rain had destroyed over 2,300 hectares of farmland in Gadan Gayan, Panshanu ward of Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

It was gathered that the rain which started on Wednesday evening lasted for over 24 hours.

In the end, a farmer Ibrahim Hamid said many farmlands were destroyed, and the affected farmers are in a state of despair and hopelessness.


“The quantum of losses incurred by the poor farmers is better said than imagine,” Hamid stressed.

Meanwhile, reacting to this development, the Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Rt. Honourable Yusuf Ibrahim Zailani has commiserated with the 500 farmers affected.

He expressed this in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Ibrahim Dahiru Danfulani on Friday.

The statement noted, “the number of farmers affected about 500 is alarming, more so, the destruction of crops as a result of the torrential rain at this time in our nation’s history affects all of us especially with the current food security threats and the rising cost of staple food items.”

Zailani who is also the chairman of the Northern Speakers Conference advised the affected farmers to be strong, assuring that “the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government at the federal, state and local government levels are deeply concerned about their welfare and would do all within its resources to assist them.”

He also advised all citizens of the state to take early warning signs of flooding seriously and abide by all the measures given by experts.

“Like avoid blocking waterways and dumping of refuse in water channels,” he said.

The Speaker also kicked about the idea of staying close to river banks or relocating temporarily to such areas.
