The Russian Embassy in Kenya has taunted the United States over the recent discovery of lithium and other earth minerals in Kaduna State, Northern Nigeria.
On June 24, the Nigerian government announced that it has recorded a breakthrough in its solid minerals sector following the discovery of a world-class polymetallic mineral province in Kaduna State containing platinum group metals, gold, nickel, copper, lithium and rare earth elements.
The government said the new mineral province contained exceptionally high-grade deposits of strategic minerals that are increasingly sought after globally for clean energy technologies and advanced manufacturing.
Reacting to the development on Monday, in a post on its verified page on the X platform, the embassy claimed that the US may be planning to hijack the minerals from Nigeria.
“Looks like someone in Washington just updated the travel schedule,” the post by the Russian embassy read in part.
“America First” has a way of becoming “Nigeria Next.
“Soon we’ll probably start hearing urgent calls for ‘ democratisation,” “protecting democratic values,’ and ‘supporting civil society ‘. ”
What people are saying on X
However, people have criticised the handles of the Russian Embassy in Kenya’s X page, questioning the importance and necessity of the post.
An X user, Nyakwar Duak, fumed over the post and said, “What a bunch of clowns running this X handle. An embassy responsible for seeing good relations between Kenya and Russia has now resorted to juvenile posts throwing banter at another country while Russia is failing and losing the war in Ukraine. Joseph Olarewoju wrote, “Your friends, the Chinese, are already in our forests mining our solid minerals illegally while causing insecurity at the same time.
Washington doesn’t hide the same way Beijing and Moscow do.
Remember how Moscow mined huge gold from the Central African Republic using the Wagner Army!
Mutiu Alabi commented, “Absolutely
That is the American government’s playbook.
Always looting Africa and leaving us vulnerable and calling it ‘democracy and freedom’.
Soon, you will hear the ‘genocidal rhetoric and invasion’ right from their playbook.
The US is a vampire for mineral resources.
The world cannot sit and watch Washington destroy Africa.
Another X user, Phoenix, expressed anxiety that Russia and the US are the same, adding he did not trust either Washington, Moscow or Beijing.
Diplomatic fight between Russia and US in Africa
In the vast expanse of Africa, a new chapter in geopolitical influence is being written, with Russia and the US vying for prominence. As the continent rises in global importance due to its resources, burgeoning markets, and strategic significance, the world powers are engaging in a multifaceted competition for the hearts, minds, and resources of African nations.
The diplomatic and geopolitical struggle between Russia and the United States in Africa centres heavily on resource-rich and conflict-prone regions like the Sahel, where both powers are actively competing for military footholds, diplomatic alliances, and access to critical minerals.
Russia’s resurgence under President Vladimir Putin has brought renewed attention to its interests in Africa. The Russian approach combines diplomacy, military cooperation, aid, and economic engagement. Moscow’s strategy capitalises on historical ties established during the Soviet era and leverages shared challenges such as counterterrorism and arms sales.
