2 Factories Sealed For Violating Environmental Sanitation Laws In Kano

Kano State Environmental Mobile Court, on Saturday, sealed two factories for not participating in the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in the state.

The affected companies, NINA Plastics and Prosper Plastics Companies, were also ordered to pay a fine of N500,000 each.

The state usually orders all commercial activities to remain closed every last Saturday of the month to observe monthly sanitation till 10:00am.

The Chief Magistrate of the court, Justice Auwal Yusuf Suleiman, gave the order during an inspection to the Challawa Industrial Area in the Kano Metropolis.

Suleiman said the factories operated within the stipulated environmental sanitation hours in contravention of sections 61 and 104 of the National Environmental Laws.

“The factories will re-open after complying with the law by tendering a written clearance from the State Ministry of Environment,” he said.

Also speaking, the state Commissioner for Environment, Dr Kabiru Ibrahim-Getso, said the affected companies were not among those exempted from the exercise.

Ibrahim-Getso said that some firms were exempted from participating in the exercise due to the nature of their essential operations.

The commissioner commended the Kano State Road Traffic Agency for its proactive steps towards enforcing the environmental sanitation laws.

Daily Trust reports that the mobile court also convicted no fewer than 10 motorists and passengers for similar offenses.
