2 killed as gunmen attack Benue communities

 

At least two people have been reportedly killed by armed invaders in fresh attacks on two villages of Apa Local Government Area of Benue State.

Residents said the assailants attacked Akpete community in Apa LGA on Friday at about 6pm, killing two persons identified as Matthew Ochanga and Isaac Adanu, while leaving many others injured.

The attackers were also said to have invaded Edikwu community in same Apa LGA about the same time but were repelled by security operatives.

Chairman of Apa LGA, Adams Ocheiga, confirmed the incidents to our correspondent on telephone on Saturday evening.

Ocheiga said soldiers and youths formed formidable forces against the attackers in Edikwu and chased them away.

He added that two residents were killed in Akpete community.

He said security operations had been intensified in the affected areas to forestall a repeat of the incident.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, also confirmed the development, saying, “the Command on the 6th of February 2026 received a situation report on an attack by suspected armed Fulani herdsmen on Edikwu Icho in Apa Local Government Area.

“The attack was repelled through the efforts of operatives of the Benue State Police Command attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS). Following the intervention, the general security situation in Apa Local Government Area remains calm.”

The PPRO added that the bridge linking Ugbokpo, Idogbu, Ochumeku and Ikobi, all in Apa LGA, which was earlier burnt by suspected herdsmen, was being replaced.

Edet said reconstruction work was ongoing under heavy security presence to ensure the safety of personnel and members of the public.

The statement acknowledged the continued support and collaboration from other security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, Civil Protection Guard and relevant Benue State Government officials.

Edet noted that the synergy with the police remained instrumental to the successful execution of operations and the maintenance of peace and public safety across the state.
