Two people have been reportedly killed in a fresh attack by armed assailants while returning from the market in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, DailytTrust reports.
Witnesses said the victims were ambushed on their way from the Jato-Aka market to Nzaav community in Yaav Council Ward of Turan district when the attackers struck.
They said the assailants opened fire and inflicted severe machete cuts on the victims.
A former official of Kwande LGA, Akerigba Lawrence, told our correspondent by telephone that the incident occurred around 4 p.m. on Saturday.
He said the bodies were later discovered with deep wounds, lying in pools of blood.
“This is disturbing. The bodies were badly wounded. It shows that the attacks are still ongoing even after the invaders overran all the communities except Jato-Aka in Turan land,” he said.
Chairman of Kwande LGA, Yarkwan Tersua, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview and appealed for urgent intervention, noting that residents remain helpless in the face of repeated violence.
Tersua described the killings in the area as devastating, adding that the situation posed serious challenges to community safety. He said investigations were ongoing to identify those responsible.
“We are calling on the federal government to swiftly come to our aid,” he said.
According to DailytTrust, police spokesperson for the Benue Command, DSP Udeme Edet, was yet to comment on the incident as of press time, as calls and messages to her phone were unanswered.
