2023: Groups insist on Igbo presidency, vow to use legal action if denied

Two groups in Southeast; South East for President 2023(SEFORP 2023) and Igbo Leadership Development Foundation(ILDF) have sworn to use legal action against any major political party in the country that refuses to zone its 2023 Presidential ticket to the Southeast geopolitical zone.

The South East For President 2023 (SEFORP2023) and The Igbo Leadership Development Foundation (ILDF) claim to have been in consistent advocacy for the emergence of a Nigerian president from the South East Zone in 2023.

The associations said they remain resolute in their demand from the political actors to ensure that equity, justice, fairness and Federal Character Act was served to all the constituent parts of the Nigerian federation through balancing of political powers, zoning and rotation of presidential power in Nigeria.

The groups in a statement signed by Rev Okechukwu Christopher Obioha National Coordinator SEFORP2023 and Dr Godwin Udibe National Chairman of ILDF, alleged subterranean manoeuvrings in the major political parties in the country to shortchange the South East in the presidential contest in 2023.

“We wish to make it abundantly clear that any arrangement, be it at political stakeholders or political party levels, which denies the South East of the presidential slot in 2023 will be resisted by every possible legal means.

“We call on Nigerian Political Parties to respect the Federal Character Act and zoning principles enshrined in their Constitutions and zone their presidential tickets to the South East Zone in clear, unambiguous and unequivocal terms within the next thirty(30) days, failing which we will take out a legal action for appropriate reliefs but in particular for the order of court compelling all the registered political parties to zone their presidential ticket to South East Zone.

“We wish to specifically advise the PDP to jettison the illogical argument of its seeking to zone its presidential ticket to the North in 2023, on the basis that it has produced two Presidents from the South with a cumulative tenure of about 14 years and a President from the North with a short-lived tenure of about two and half years. The ultimate benefits of zoning are for the six geo-political zones of Nigeria. Once a zone has taken its turn, it is only natural for another zone to take the position in the next round of the presidential election.

“We call on all Nigerians of good conscience to rally support for the South East zone for the sake of equity, justice and fairness. The political actors especially should embrace practices that will unite the country and not those that will further widen the gulf of division. We all need to consciously work for the peace and unity of this country. Ends.
