2027 could be my last presidential race, says Peter Obi

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), says the 2027 presidential race could be his last bid to contest for Nigeria’s highest political office.

In 2019, Obi was the vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alongside Atiku Abubakar.

In 2023, the former governor of Anambra contested as the presidential candidate of the Labour Party.

In May, he became the flagbearer of the NDC for the 2027 general election after defecting from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking during an interview with Channels Television on Sunday night, Obi hinted that the next general election could be his final attempt at the ballot.

“It depends on who wins,” Obi said.

“But I can tell you, I’m coming to the end of it because I believe that the younger ones should be allowed.”

The former Anambra governor said advancing age would make it difficult to sustain the energy required for the office.

“I’ll be 68 or 69. So, if you add that to another eight years, I will be 77, or 78. I don’t think I’ll have the energy I have today because that capacity is very important. It’s critical,” he said.

Obi said the decision on whether to seek office after 2027 depends on the outcome of that poll.

He emphasised the belief that younger Nigerians should be given greater opportunities to lead.
