Nigeria suffers 2,000 violent deaths in three months — Report

No fewer than 2,000 Nigerians were killed in violent incidents across the country between January and March 2025, according to data compiled by SBM Intelligence.

The deaths, from attacks by terrorists, armed robbers, bandits and the Boko Haram sect, also include casualties from abductions, gang clashes and military operations.

SBM’s latest chart, released in April, paints a grim picture of insecurity nationwide. Of the total fatalities, 892 were civilians, making them the most affected group.

The figure also includes 462 bandits, 234 Boko Haram members, 119 vigilantes, 110 soldiers and 24 policemen.

At least 136 security personnel, comprising NSCDC officers, police and soldiers, lost their lives within the period.

Borno state topped the list of affected states with 515 reported killings, followed closely by Zamfara with 408. Other high-fatality states included Katsina (155), Benue (101) and Niger (68).

Even relatively calmer southern states like Anambra, Edo and Ondo recorded between 58 and 63 deaths each, a sign that violence is spreading across the country with no region spared.
