Four soldiers killed in suspected ISWAP attack in Borno

Four soldiers have been killed in an attack by suspected ISWAP terrorists on security installations in Auno community, Konduga LGA of Borno state.

TheCable understands that the incident occurred on February 5 at approximately 11pm.

The assailants were said to have simultaneously targeted military forward operating bases (FOB), the police crack squad, and rapid response squad (RRS) bases, while sporadically firing into the compounds.

According to military sources, the attackers planted an improvised explosive device (IED) along the road to prevent reinforcements.

“A military gun truck en route to the scene triggered the IED, fatally injuring four soldiers,” the source said.

The sources added that several soldiers sustained varying degrees of injuries during the attack.

Inspector Salisu Adamu, attached to the police crack squad in Maiduguri, was shot in the leg and is currently receiving treatment at the State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri.

The injured soldiers were evacuated to the Military Hospital at the 7 Division Nigerian Army Headquarters, where four of them, who sustained fatal injuries, were certified dead.

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI, alongside personnel of the police crack squad, RRS, and local hunters, were said to have successfully repelled the attack.

Borno has remained a hotspot for terror attacks in Nigeria, with both soldiers and civilians frequently targeted.

The attack comes just days after dozens of residents were killed and several houses set ablaze when suspected terrorists attacked the Nuku and Woro communities in Kaiama LGA of Kwara state.
