The Abia State Police Command on Saturday said it had restored calm to the Uratta-Eziukwu area of Aba North Local Government Area following an attack on the divisional police headquarters by unidentified armed men in the early hours of the day.
The attack, which occurred at about 2:26 a.m., involved the use of explosives, causing a fire that damaged part of the building and a divisional patrol van.
Two senior police officers were killed, while three inspectors sustained injuries and are receiving medical attention.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, and made available to Channels Television, the command said no firearms or ammunition were carted away during the incident.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Afolabi, personally led tactical teams to the area, where they combed the surrounding environment and restored calm.
Governor Alex Otti was also at the divisional police headquarters and assessed the level of damage done by the hoodlums.
The command stated that intensified security operations were ongoing to apprehend those responsible, assuring that all necessary operational and intelligence resources will be deployed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
He expressed condolences to the families of the deceased officers and the entire police family, while urging residents to remain calm, vigilant, and provide credible information that could assist the ongoing investigation.
The incident came five months after 17 officers were killed in Yobe State during an attack by terrorists on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of the state.
Last month, a police officer was among the five people killed in separate attacks in Barkin Ladi and Mangu Local Government Areas of Plateau State, despite a dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed on the affected areas.
