At least two persons have died in a boat mishap in Ahoada East LGA of Rivers state.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening at Aliya (Over Bridge) in Ahoada Town after a leaking canoe conveying passengers home from work capsized.
The victims were identified as Mekalachi Gogochuri, 25, and his 23-year-old sister, Rejoice Gogochuri.
The siblings were said to be returning home from work when the hand-paddled canoe overturned at about 7:45pm.
Five other passengers aboard the canoe reportedly survived the accident.
When contacted, Agabe Kaborlo, police spokesperson in the state, confirmed the incident to TheCable.
She said the canoe operator has been taken into custody as investigations continue.
“It is true that two persons died in the boat mishap. The operator of the boat has been taken in for questioning and investigation is still ongoing,” she said.
