Court grants Sowore N200m bail in ‘cybercrime’ trial

A federal high court in Abuja has granted N200 million bail to Omoyele Sowore, activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC).

Mohammed Umar, the presiding judge, on Tuesday, restored Sowore’s bail with fresh conditions.

According to Sahara Reporters, Umar ordered that Sowore must provide two sureties.

One of the sureties should be a traditional ruler from Sowore’s community, while the second surety must own landed property within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The judge also ordered Sowore to deposit his passport with the court registrar as part of the bail conditions pending the determination of the case.

HOW SOWORE’S BAIL WAS REVOKED

The Department of State Services (DSS) is prosecuting Sowore on a two-count charge over a social media post in which he allegedly described President Bola Tinubu as “a criminal” on his X and Facebook accounts.

The activist had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Subsequently, the court granted the defendant bail on self-recognition basis.

On June 16, the presiding judge revoked Sowore’s bail and issued a warrant of arrest against him after the activist failed to attend the day’s proceedings.

The judge held that the letter seeking an adjournment on Sowore’s behalf did not provide reasons for his absence from court.

On June 22, Umar ordered the remand of Sowore at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his application challenging the revocation of his bail.

The judge had also dismissed an application by Sowore seeking the judge’s recusal from the case on grounds of alleged bias.
