Rainstorm kills 4, destroys school, hospital in Sokoto

Four persons have been confirmed dead, several others injured, and hundreds of households affected following a devastating windstorm and heavy rainfall that swept through communities in Kware Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Saturday.
The rainstorm also destroyed numerous houses and damaged critical public infrastructure, including a primary school and a hospital.
In response, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Sokoto Operations Office, conducted an assessment of the affected communities to determine the extent of the destruction and identify the immediate humanitarian needs of victims.
The assessment covered Mallamawa, Mai Mushe, Kaura, Sabon Gari, Rungin Tsamiya and other surrounding settlements affected by the storm.
According to NEMA’s preliminary findings, the disaster left hundreds of families displaced, with many homes either destroyed or severely damaged.
Several residents also sustained varying degrees of injuries, while four fatalities were recorded.
The agency said the assessment exercise was aimed at establishing the scale of the damage to facilitate timely emergency response and the provision of relief materials to affected communities.
NEMA added that it would continue to work with relevant state and local authorities to ensure appropriate humanitarian assistance reaches the victims as efforts continue to determine the full impact of the disaster.
