Five gunmen killed as police repel attack on Imo command

At least five gunmen were killed by the police in a foiled attack on Imo state command.

Bala Elkana, police spokesperson in Imo, confirmed the incident to TheCable.

He said the attackers arrived at the police command in a white Hummer bus in the early hours of Sunday.

Elkana said officers immediately denied the gunmen access and engage them in a shooting, leaving five of them dead.

He said four AK-47 rifles were recovered from the gunmen.

“They made an attempt to attack our station but we denied them access into even the main building; we blocked by the exit point,” he said.

“They came in a Hummer bus; they suffered casualty on their side. The figure at the moment is five down on their side.

“Four AK-47 rifles that they stole from the police in previous attacks at our stations were recovered from them.

“Five of them killed. We have one police officer that is injured.”

The incident is the latest in a series of attacks by gunmen in the south-east.

Gunmen have targeted police stations, offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other public infrastructure in the south-east.

Last week, gunmen attacked Izombe police station in Oguta LGA of Imo and set it ablaze.
