Gunmen have killed seven people in Gero community, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, in a fresh attack that has heightened concerns over the security of residents.
The assailants reportedly stormed the community at about 9:30 p.m. on Monday and opened fire on unsuspecting residents at relaxation spots and nearby shops.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the attack in a telephone interview with Channels Television, saying seven people were killed.
According to him, the bodies of the victims had been deposited in a mortuary.
Tengwong called on the Plateau State Government and security agencies to strengthen surveillance and intensify security operations to prevent further attacks and protect residents.
He also urged the authorities to ensure that those responsible for the killings were identified, arrested and brought to justice.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Plateau State Command, SP Alfred Alabo, confirmed that an incident had occurred in the community.
Alabo said the command was making arrangements to visit the area, adding that he could not confirm the casualty figure until he received a full briefing from the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area.
He said the Commissioner of Police’s prompt response reflected the command’s continued efforts to ensure the safety of communities across the state.
The police spokesman assured residents that the command would pursue the attackers and ensure they were arrested and brought to book.
