Kano State High Court yesterday adjourned the case of Sharrif Yahaya, who was sentenced to death by hanging, till November 26, 2020, for hearing of the appeal.
The appellant is challenging the Upper Shariah Court judgment which sentenced Yahaya, 30, to death by hanging.
Umar Farouq, 17, was sentenced to 10-years imprisonment for blasphemy against the Holy Prophet Muhammad Yahaya was held for making derogatory statements against Allah.
At High Court, Appeal Division, yesterday when the matter came up for hearing, the appellant was however absent.
The appellants sent in their message through a representative, Zubairu Suleiman Usman, seeking an adjournment on the premises that they were served on a short notice and can’t make it due to some serious issues in Lagos.
The appeal panel presided over by the Chief Judge, Justice Nuraddeen Sagir, granted their request and adjourned the case to November 26 to enable the respondents serve the appellant notice in good time and appear before the court.
“The court is aware of the unrest in Lagos, and as a result of this, we have adjourned till November 26. The respondents shall serve the appellant in good time,” he stated.
The counsel to the respondents (state government) and the Attorney-General of the state, Musa Abdullahi Lawan, said it would file an application before the court to enable it serve the appellants through substituted means in good time to enable them go through the processes and respond before the next adjournment date.
Recall that the blasphemers, through one of their lawyers, Kola Alanipini, had filed a suit before the state high court to appeal the judgment of the Sharia court sitting in Hausawa Filin Hockey in Kano State.
