Edo NSCDC commandant slumps, dies during award ceremony in Benin

Gbenga Agun, Edo commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), died on Thursday during an event that would have honoured him in Benin City, the state’s capital.

Ogbebor Efosa, Edo NSCDC spokesperson, confirmed Agun’s passing to TheCable on Friday.

The event was organised by the International Association of World Peace Advocates to mark the 2025 International Day of Peace.

Agun was among personalities to be awarded at the event.

But the commandant, who was also the keynote speaker, slumped shortly after delivering his address.

Efosa added that he was rushed to the Military Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

“As an astute operations officer, Commandant Agun Gbenga worked tirelessly to ensure the protection of lives and property of citizens,” Efosa said in a statement.

“His humility, friendliness, and intelligence earned him great respect and admiration. His dedication to duty and commitment to excellence will be deeply missed.

“The NSCDC Edo State Command and the nation have lost a dedicated officer.”

The NSCDC HQ is expected to issue a statement on the commandant’s passing soon.
