EFCC detains 10 officers over ‘theft of operational items’

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has detained 10 of its officers attached to the Lagos zonal command over alleged theft of operational items.

In a statement on Wednesday, Dele Oyewale, the EFCC spokesperson, said the officers were arrested last week based on the directive of Ola Olukoyede, chairman of the commission.

Oyewale said the officers are “answering questions related to the theft of some operational items that they could not account for”.

The EFCC spokesperson did not mention the names of the officers involved in the alleged theft.

“In its continuing efforts to sweep the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) clean of corrupt tendencies, 10 officers of the Lagos Zonal Command of the EFCC are being detained over the investigation of some missing items involving them,” the statement reads.

“Investigators are making good progress, and those found culpable will be subjected to internal disciplinary processes.”

On Monday, the anti-graft agency announced that it dismissed 27 officers over alleged fraudulent activities and misconduct.

Oyewale had said the agency’s disciplinary committee recommended the dismissal of the officers.

He added that the agency is also probing an allegation against a sectional head.

He did not mention the names of the dismissed officers.
