Enugu Air plane with 68 passengers skids off runway at Benin airport

An aircraft operated by Enugu Air skidded off the runway of the Benin airport during landing on Thursday.

The aviation company confirmed the incident in a statement posted on its official X account.

The plane, with registration number 5N-ENR, had no fewer than 68 passengers on board, excluding the crew members.

The airline said all passengers and crew safely disembarked from the aircraft, “with no injuries or casualties recorded”.

Enugu Air said the aircraft has been secured, noting that the relevant aviation authorities have also been notified in line with established procedures.

We sincerely thank our passengers for their patience, understanding, and cooperation.

We are pleased to confirm that all passengers and crew safely disembarked with no injuries reported.

“An assessment of the aircraft and the circumstances surrounding the occurrence is currently underway,” the airline said.

“As a result, there may be temporary adjustments to some flight schedules. Passengers affected by any changes will be contacted directly and provided with the necessary assistance.”

Enugu Air said the safety of its passengers, crew and operations remains its top priority, adding that further updates will be communicated through its official channels.

The incident comes exactly one year after the airline began operations in July 2025.

The airline commenced operations after Peter Mbah, governor of Enugu state, partnered with XE Jet, an existing airline, to fast-track the process of obtaining an air operator certificate (AOC), which “typically takes up to two years”, according to Festus Keyamo, minister of aviation and aerospace development.

Keyamo said the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) also approved the partnership, allowing Enugu Air to commence operations without delay.
