EXTRA: EFCC Chief defends Tompolo, says viral video of Naira abuse could be doctored

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Olanipekun Olukoyede, has cautioned Nigerians against declaring former militant leader, Government Tompolo, guilty of Naira abuse.

In a video that went viral, the former militant leader was seen getting sprayed with N1,000 notes by an unidentified man during his 54th birthday ceremony.
The Guardian had reported that many Nigerians were mounting pressure on the anti-graft commission to prosecute Tompolo just as it prosecuted others it accused of abusing the naira.
While addressing these demands in a recent interview, Olukoyede told Nigerians not to condemn Tompolo over the Naira abuse allegations.
The chairman further noted that Tompolo has been invited to Nigeria, and the viral video has been subjected to forensic analysis to address concerns about the possibility of the video being AI-generated.
“We have invited Tompolo to Nigeria. The only Nigerians know that, and we said there is no one who’s above the law,” said Olukoyede.
“Nobody should condemn Tompolo for the allegation. It is just a mere allegation for now.”
Speaking further, the EFCC Chairman also emphasised the need for granting Tompolo a fair hearing.

“You cannot say Tompolo’s guilty or not. We must give every Nigerian fair hearing.”
Earlier this month, the Federal High Court in Ikoyi sentenced Nigerian artiste, Babatunde Peter Olaitan, known as Tee Dollar, and a content creator, Tobilola Olamide, aka Tobi Nation, to six months in prison for naira abuse.
