Fact Check: Meta yet to list Nigeria among countries eligible for monetization

By Pascal Ibe

On Saturday, 1st June 2024, the claim that Nigeria has been listed as eligible country for monetization by Meta, flooded social media.

The claim which trended manly on Facebook stated “BREAKING News: Facebook Finally Lists Nigeria as an Eligible Country for Monetization.“

A Facebook page named Igbo History and many others posted this claim on Saturday and users believed that this is true.

On March 21, In a report by Channels TV, Meta said Nigerian creators will have instagram monetisation feature by June 2024.

Meta’s President of Global Affairs Sir Nick Clegg spoke about this when he led a delegation of Meta Platforms Incorporated to visit President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

“Sir Clegg also said Meta will introduce in June 2024 a feature on its Instagram app that will allow Nigerian creators to monetize their content to enable them to earn a living using the app,” presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale said in a statement.

Monetization And In-Stream Ads?

In-stream ads help eligible video creators earn money by including short ads before or during qualifying videos. Creators will get a share of the revenue from the video ads shown to viewers. Viewers must view the entire ad to continue watching a video. Because different advertisers target different types of people, each viewer may see a different ad during the same in-stream ad.

There are three types of in-stream ads today:

Pre-roll ads: Ads that play before your video starts. These are shown to people who actively seek out the content either by search, on a Page timeline, or on the Watchlist in Watch. The more viewers that seek out the content, the more payouts the creator will receive from pre-roll.

Mid-roll ads: Ads that play during your video. These work the best within a video that has natural break points. Today, the vast majority of videos are still discovered in News Feed. To take advantage of all monetization opportunities, we recommend that creators program their content for mid-roll.

Image ads: This type of ad is a static image that shows up below the content and doesn’t impact the viewing experience.

Verification

However, crimefacts news findings indicated that as at Sunday morning, June 2nd 2024, there has not been any official announcement by Meta authorities or Nigerian government on Nigeria being listed among countries that are eligible for monetization.

When we checked the 26 countries eligible for monetization on Meta website, Nigeria was not listed there

Again, no reputable news organization anywhere in Nigeria reported the above claim.

Verdict

The claim that Nigeria has been listed as an eligible country for Monetization is False.

As at 2nd June 2024, this cannot be proven anywhere.
