FactCheck: Post calling for killing of Igbos OLD, user arrested in 202

An x account, Voice of Igbos has shared a screenshot of tweet by one Kehinde Adekusibe, calling for Igbos.

Igbo is one of the three major ethnic groups in Nigeria.

Voice of Igbos shared the screenshot and wrote, “BREAKING: A Nigerian Man call for mass m@ssacre of Igbo (South Easterners) by sl@ttering them.

The post generated over 130k views and many comments which condemned calling for the killings of Igbos.

One of the commenters, @hope_igbos_tech said, “He is not in jail
He was never summon to any Nigeria police for questioning
He is working a Free Man

Background

The divisive utterances between Igbos and Yorubas escalated this weeks after Amaka Patience, a Nigerian woman based in Ontario, Canada, appeared in a disturbing video calling for the killing of South-Westerners and the people of Benin, Edo State capital through mass poisoning.

The woman, who made the call in a TikTok live meeting video making the rounds on social media, vowed to start poisoning foods and waters of Yoruba and Benin people at her place of work.

She asked people of the South-East region of Nigeria, popularly known as Igbos to develop a hard heart and start poisoning Yorubas of the South-West and Benins of the South-South by poisoning their foods and waters anywhere they see them.

Speaking in Pidgin language, the woman who is probably Igbo said, “Record me very very well. It is time to start poisoning the Yorubas and the Benins. Put poison in all your foods at work. Put poison in all your water so that you all will start dying one-by-one.

Verification

Verifying the post by Voice of Igbos on X, first, a closer look at that screenshot, indicated that the post calling for the killing of Igbos was made on May 18, 2023.

When this Fact Checker searched for the user @GideonAdekusibe, it was discovered that the account is no longer available on X.

This Fact Checker found a statement in which Nigeria police confirmed the arrest of Kehinde Adekusibe who called for the killing of Igbo.

The post by Voice of Igbos is MISLEADING.

Checks showed this incident happened in May 2023 and the man was arrested by the Nigeria police.
