Gunmen invaded communities in Ukum LGA of Benue early Sunday morning, killing several residents and injuring others.
The attack was said to have happened in Mbaterem, Ayaba, Ikpur, Yina, Aboajio and Ukpen communities of Mbazun Ward.
Hyacinth Alia, state governor, condoled with the communities over the attack.
According to a statement issued by Tersoo Kula, Alia’s chief press secretary, the terrorists masqueraded as herdsmen before striking.
“Governor Hyacinth Alia appreciates the prompt response by security agencies in the herdsmen terror attack on Ukum Local Government Area,” the statement reads.
“The Governor consoles those who lost loved ones and the injured, vowing to keep giving the necessary support to security agencies to effectively protect the state.”
Kula noted that the governor also warned against further terrorist attacks while commending security agencies for their prompt response.
“Benue lands for Benue people. Anyone who thinks the attacking us will intimidate us to leave the land is making a mistake,” the governor was quoted as saying.
“I took an oath to protect our people, and I will not relent. I must appreciate the fact that the federal government is advancing a lot of support for us to tackle these acts of terrorism.”
Last month, several persons were reportedly killed after suspected armed herders attacked Sai community in Katsina-Ala LGA of Benue.
In April, at least 17 persons have been reported killed in an attack on Mbalom community in Gwer-east LGA.
