A man is on the run after he allegedly defiled a 9-year-old girl at Dagiri, a community in Gwagwalada Area Council of the FCT.
According to a resident, Suleiman Alhassan, the incident happened on Thursday around 8pm.
He said the girl was on an errand for her mother, who had sent her to a nearby shop to buy mosquito coils when the suspect lured her with a biscuit and allegedly defiled her.
A woman passing by the backyard of an uncompleted building heard the girl crying. According to the resident, when the woman flashed a touchlight in the area, she saw what was happening and immediately raised the alarm.
“It was a woman passing through the backyard of the uncompleted building who saw the girl crying after she flashed a torchlight because the place was dark,” Alhassan said.
He added, “She discovered what happened to the girl, and the man jumped through the fence and escaped.”
According to Alhassan, a neighbour who recognised the girl led her home.
He said her mother later discovered a bloodstain on the girl’s private parts and immediately alerted a vigilante member who lived in the area. The vigilante took the girl to a hospital where a doctor confirmed she was forcefully penetrated, he added.
He said the girl’s father was out of town at the time of the incident but she was treated at the hospital.
A vigilante member, who requested to remain anonymous, also confirmed the incident and said it had been reported to the police.
“The girl’s mother is my neighbour, so when the incident happened, she immediately sent for me, and I joined her at the hospital where doctors confirmed that the girl was actually defiled,” he said.
He added, “It was unfortunate that the suspect escaped when he discovered the woman was coming toward his direction, but we are still trying to see if we can trace and get him arrested.”
Police sources in the community also confirmed the incident, stating that the suspect is on the run and that an investigation is ongoing.
